What is a USI?

Your USI is a 10-character combination of letters and numbers that stays with you for life. It is used for nationally recognised:

• Vocational Education and Training (VET)
• University and Higher Education
• Accessing transcripts, certificates and loans

Who Needs a USI?

You are required to have a USI if you are:

• Studying nationally recognised VET
• Applying for a VET Student Loan
• A university student applying for Commonwealth financial assistance
• Graduating from a higher education program

Creating Your USI

You can create a USI at any age as long as you have valid identification. Make sure your name and details match exactly across:

• USI registration
• Tax File Number (TFN)
• myGov account

Using the same document across all platforms helps prevent delays in enrolment, access to records, and graduation.

International Students

• If studying in Australia: a USI is required for VET and higher education
• USI can only be created after arriving in Australia
• Use your Australian visa and non-Australian passport to apply
• Notify your provider of your USI once created

If all studies were completed overseas, a USI is not required.
